Volunteer Anti Poaching Ranger Dustin Thompson

Since 2011 we, Wild and Free Foundation ( https://www.wildandfreefoundation.org ), have been documenting the story of rhino poaching through the eyes of Anti-Poaching Rangers. We are filming the survival or extinction of the rhinoceros by telling the stories of the people involved, and using the footage to build awareness of rhino poaching and inspire a movement to save rhinos and save nature. Educating the world about rhino poaching using film. 85% of the world’s remaining wild rhinos live in South Africa. Only since 2008 has rhino poaching become the issue it is today. In 2007 there were only 13 rhinos poached in South Africa, in 2015 there were 1,300 killed. Rhino poaching has changed dramatically, it is now controlled by well funded, heavily armed, organized crime syndicates. Land-owners with rhinos on their property and anti-poaching companies are burdened with the new costs of protecting rhinos: automatic weapons; ammunition; more rangers; better ranger training; more ranger gear; vehicles; new surveillance technology. The cost to protect rhinos has become cost prohibitive. Funds raised by Wild and Free Foundation go towards helping pay the costs necessary to protect rhinos.
