Looks like I'm not the only one going from nought to sixty on day one... But, hold up a second-- oh, my goodness, yes. As of the day of recording, editing, and uploading, Even The Ocean is finally available to purchase, play, and whatever else, after spending years in development. What's so special about Even The Ocean, I hear you ask? Why, it was made by the same two amazing individuals responsible for Anodyne, one of my all-time favourite indie-games...and one of my favourite LPs, to boot. Need a refresher on that? Look no further than this link: • LP 7: Anodyne (PC) Now that that's all cleared up, what actually is this game? In simple terms, a platformer that's almost Metroidvania in execution-- except it's more linear in terms of layout, which is a distinct plus, in my books. But if that's the case, what sets it apart from other games like it? Two main things-- a hugely compelling story, and a "health" system like no other. In this game, you don't have "health", to speak of; you have a balance of two opposing kinds of energy, referred to interchangeable as Light and Dark, Green and Purple, and Y and X. In each case, having plenty of the former increases your vertical mobility at the expense of your horizontal, and an abundance of the latter results in the opposite. And here's the catch: if you're too far out of balance, and have all of one type of energy with none of the other, you die. Nature is a cruel mistress. (Oh, and at the time of upload, you can vote on what nomenclature you'd prefer for me to use for the energy-types for the rest of this series!
