Retro PC Part 8: Making our own CMOS battery

Since my 286 mainboard is missing its NiCd rechargeable CMOS battery, we need to make a new one. I do not want any replacement on the board which is NiCd and may leak again. So I opted to buy a 3.6V Lithium battery that should hold for years, and which can be coupled with a diode to prevent it from being charged by the motherboard. The 1N4148 diode has a low forward voltage, which helps in maintaining a relatively high voltage of about 3.4V for the CMOS. The battery I chose has metal strips for soldering attached and is probably absolute overkill with 2450 mAh. But I guess at a few microamps it will last a very long time...
