Due to the sand being so firm, in 1879 locals began to hold horse, motorcycle, and foot races along the beach. It was not long before the newly developed aviation industry took notice of the firm sand and decided that it would make a good spot for planes to land to collect mail being sent around Australia and to Papua New Guinea.
