In this GameLab interview, we talk with Javier Marlex Saravia García and John Anderson Chapoñan Montaño, students who created the StoryQuest Fragment as part of the Threadbare game. Their game is a sci-fi action adventure centered on a protagonist known as Unidad Sierra-7, who wakes up after a failed mission with fragmented memories and an unknown purpose Inspired by games like Halo and Titanfall, the project mixes narrative storytelling with combat mechanics, puzzles, and cinematic sequences. Players explore a futuristic environment, recover power systems, and uncover what really happened. What makes their StoryQuest unique The team focused heavily on mechanics and systems design, not just story: • A projectile-deflection mechanic where players reflect enemy shots with a sword • Play-tested difficulty balancing to reduce frustration • Multi-layer level design to simulate depth and 3D space in a 2D game • Cinematic intro and dialogue sequences • A musical memory puzzle to restore power systems They also used real development workflows: Git version control, assigned responsibilities, and collaborative review — even recovering lost builds through version history during development The project was built in only six weeks while the students were still in university courses, requiring collaboration, debugging, and iterative design. 👉Orgs and Educators, learn more about our free learning programs: https://endlessaccess.org
