Demonstrators arrive in Barcelona for pro-union demo

(29 Oct 2017) Pro-unity protesters starting gathering in central Barcelona on Sunday morning ahead of a planned major demonstration in support of continued unity with Spain. The protest is being organised by the anti-separatist group Sociedad Civil two days after the region's parliament unilaterally declared independence. The Spanish central government has taken over the effective running of the prosperous region but Carles Puigdemont - who was sacked by Madrid in the aftermath of the independence declaration - appears to intend to continue in his post as Catalonia's president and the leader of the region's separatist.
