Freak Waves in Durban: Cyclone Swell & Massive Storm Waves | New Pier, North Beach, Bay of Plenty Experience the power of Durban’s coastline as freak waves crash onto the shore. Filmed at iconic surf spots—North Beach, New Pier, and Bay of Plenty—this video captures rare, massive swells during cyclone season. Watch as waves break on the mound where sand dredged from the Durban Port is dumped, creating unique surf conditions. Durban only sees these monster swells a few times a year, typically when a cyclone forms in the Madagascar Channel or tracks south past Mauritius and Reunion Island. Alternatively, large storms from the Southern Ocean can send swells over 5 meters high, provided they align correctly with Durban Bay’s unique coastline. Wide-angle shots were captured from the top of the Blue Waters Hotel, while surfing clips were filmed from Bay of Plenty Pier by Pablo Ponzone. The stunning cover image was provided by Simon Smith Photography. Durban, or “Durbs” as it’s affectionately called, is South Africa’s third-largest city and a key destination for surfers and beachgoers. Part of the eThekwini Metropolitan Municipality, it boasts some of the best beaches on the Indian Ocean coast, many of which hold Blue Flag status. Highlights: • New Pier: Known for its fast, hollow tubes that can reach over 10 feet on a good swell. A favorite among surfers for its consistency and thrilling rides. • North Beach: Home to powerful right-handers that handle up to 10 feet, drawing bodyboarders and surfers alike for its impressive barrels.
