STORYLINE: Pope Benedict XVI returned to the clergy sex abuse scandal as he preached Saturday in a New York cathedral, assuring priests and nuns that he was close to them as they battled the damage left by the scandal. Addressing some 3,000 people at St Patrick's Cathedral, he called it a time for purification and healing. Saturday was the third anniversary of Benedict's election as pope and he was feted by cardinals and bishops, priests and nuns who jammed the Gothic church on Fifth Avenue. He was met outside by Mayor Michael Bloomberg, while former Mayor Rudy Giuliani was inside. Since the start of his trip Tuesday, Benedict has concentrated on the clergy sex abuse scandal that has shaken the US church. He has said that it is more important to have good priests than many priests. But atheist groups and religious organizations held protests a few blocks away from where Benedict gave mass. Ken Bronstein the President of the New York City Atheists accused the church of complicity. "He set up the policy that they would use avoidance to fight paedophiles. They hid the paedophiles, they gave them safe houses, they tried to use statute of limitations to overcome any type of prosecution, so when he says he's sympathetic, he's not. He's the one who caused the problems," he said. Protesters from Westborough Baptist Church from Kansas were also gathered outside the church. The group is perhaps most well known for protesting military funerals by claiming that God is punishing America for allowing homosexuality.
