통일부, 북 전통문 "9일 판문점 고위급회담 제안 수락+회담 의제 평창 비롯 관계 개선 문제" After being put on hold, finally Seoul gets an answer to a proposal for talks from Pyongyang. Tuesday, January 9th, at the border, two Koreas will sit down to discuss key issues linked to improving relations. Ji Myung-kil starts us off with the first high-level meeting since 2015. North Korea has agreed to send a delegation to high-level talks next Tuesday, which were proposed earlier this week by South Korea. (Korean) "At 10:16 a.m. Friday... the North sent us a fax forwarded to South Korea's unification minister, Cho Myoung-gyon, by Ri Son-gwon, the chair of North Korea's committee for inter-Korean affairs. The main agendas will be the North's participation in the PyeongChang Olympics and improving South-North ties." Because the fax was sent by the chair of North Korea's Committee for the Peaceful Reunification of the Country... there is a high possibility that the talks will be at the ministerial level. The two sides will meet at the Peace House in the shared border village of Panmunjeom... on the South Korean side. The North said the practical details will be discussed by exchanging documents at the communication room at Panmunjeom up until the talks begin. Seoul's unification ministry also said the government will closely coordinate with Washington about the meeting. (Korean) "We will closely consult with the United States during the process of the inter-Korean dialogue. Through talks we hope to restore inter-Korean relations, and contribute to resolving the nuclear crisis and to establishing peace on the Korean Peninsula." The presidential office of Cheong Wa Dae cautioned that the talks, for now, will be focused on the North's participation in the Olympic Games in Pyeongchang, adding that other things related to improving inter-Korean ties will come later. The organizing committee for the PyeongChang Games says it will come up with more concrete plans depending on what kind of progress is made. (Stand-up) "Seoul's unification ministry stressed that the government's stance is to prepare for the talks in a way that North Korea's participation in the Games does not violate international sanctions, including Washington's unilateral measures.
