Ascending Rope: RAD System w/ 3:1 Mechanical Advantage Assist

Ascending Rope: RAD System w/ 3:1 Mechanical Advantage Assist

Pulling up through the descender makes it a 1:1cd, while pulling down through a pulley attached to the handle ascender makes it a 3:1. In my opinion the best device to use here is a Clutch. I would not want to use any type of assisted braking/belay device such as a GriGri or Birdie because those devices have springs within the camming mechanism that want to pull the cam open the moment that it is de-tensioned. I have found that many people tend to lose some progress after they've pulled rope through but before sitting down back into the system to weight the device.... the slower they sit down to weight the device, the more rope is lost back through the open cam. It is also for this reason that I do not want to use these devices anywhere for rescue or positioning applications.
