Ryan created Rapture as a secluded utopia where society’s elite could thrive free from government control and moral restriction, completely cut off from the surface world. The city prospered at first, fueled by ambition and scientific breakthroughs. Everything changed with the discovery of ADAM, a genetic substance that granted superhuman abilities through plasmids and gene tonics. As ADAM addiction spread, society began to collapse. Amid growing inequality, con man Frank Fontaine built a criminal empire to rival Ryan. With scientists Brigid Tenenbaum and Yi Suchong, he advanced plasmid research and mass-produced ADAM using slugs implanted into orphaned girls known as Little Sisters. After Fontaine’s apparent death, Ryan seized control of the program. Soon after, a revolutionary named Atlas led the oppressed citizens into civil war. Plasmid-enhanced Splicers ravaged the city, while heavily armored Big Daddies were created to protect the Little Sisters. By New Year’s Eve 1958, Rapture had descended into chaos. The war left the once-grand utopia in ruins, its citizens either dead, insane from ADAM abuse, or hiding from the violence.
