Coutts, Alberta, Canada-Sweet Grass, Montana Border Crossing

Coutts is a village in southern Alberta, Canada and is one of the busiest ports of entry on the Canada-United States border in western Canada. The Coutts-Sweet Grass, Montana joint border facility opened in 2004 and houses both Canadian and American federal authorities. We’ve driven across the Canadian and Mexican borders and have walked across the Mexican border a number of times but hadn’t walked into Canada yet so this was the perfect time. The town of Sweet Grass, Montana has a population of 70 and the village of Coutts has a population of 224. In this area 99% of people drive over the border. We walked from the US side through an enclosed glass bridge and followed the signs to the Canadian border where we walked up to a car lane booth that was open. She was surprised that we were walking and asked why we weren’t driving and why we wanted to go Coutts. We told her we just wanted to walk in and look around. She asked “why?” and we said “why not?” and at that point we were free to be on our merry way. We walked around town and to the Coutts welcome sign where they have a sign with United States, Canada and Alberta and then the US and Canadian flags. Before we left we stopped in the duty free store. Fun fact…if you walk into Coutts, Canada and then walk back into the US you can not buy anything in the duty free store. They saw that we didn’t arrive by vehicle and let us know right away that the only way we could buy something is if we were driving straight back into the US.
