The fifth-year running back suffered a season-ending torn anterior cruciate ligament at practice Saturday, the team confirmed. 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan said earlier in the day the team was "concerned" about the injury as staff awaited an MRI. "He made a cut on air, no one was around him," Shanahan said. "He went down. It looked awkward." McKinnon, 26, signed a four-year, $30 million contract this offseason after serving primarily as a backup on the Minnesota Vikings for the last four years. He was expected to be a focal point of San Francisco's offense, particularly as a pass-catching weapon out of the backfield after recording 51 receptions in 2017.
