Gered Mankowitz FRPS: Capturing the Spirit of Music Legends through the Lens Born on August 3, 1946, Gered Mankowitz is an acclaimed English photographer who has made a remarkable impact on the music industry. Throughout his illustrious career, Mankowitz has worked with an impressive range of artists, from The Rolling Stones to Jimi Hendrix, capturing their essence in a way that transcends the boundaries of time. In addition to his work in the music realm, Mankowitz has also explored other areas of the photography industry, such as fashion, advertising, news, and private photography, further solidifying his reputation as a versatile artist. He currently operates his own gallery in North London. A Self-Taught Prodigy Mankowitz's journey began in London, where he was born as the first of four sons to English writer Wolf Mankowitz and Ann Margaret Seligman. Despite leaving school at the age of 15 without any formal qualifications, Mankowitz's innate talent for photography was soon recognized during a school trip to the Netherlands. Photographer Tom Blau offered him an apprenticeship, setting him on the path to success. In 1962, Mankowitz started his professional career in Barbados before returning to London and trying his hand at Parisian fashion photography. However, it wasn't until 1963 when Mankowitz found his true calling in the music photography industry. That same year, he opened his own studio and soon began working with iconic musicians like Marianne Faithfull and The Rolling Stones. Shaping the Image of Music Legends Mankowitz's contribution to the visual identity of The Rolling Stones, particularly through his work on the album cover of "Between the Buttons," remains an important part of the band's history. His honest and personal approach to capturing the band's essence resonated with both their manager, Andrew Loog Oldham, and the band members themselves. One of Mankowitz's most iconic works, his photographs of Jimi Hendrix, remained relatively unknown until 1992, when they were unveiled at his first solo exhibition in London. These black and white images, initially overlooked due to Hendrix's manager's preference for color photos, have since become a significant part of Hendrix's visual legacy. A Lasting Impact With a career spanning more than five decades, Gered Mankowitz has not only left a lasting impression on the world of music photography but also contributed to major publications and advertising campaigns. His work continues to be exhibited and sold in galleries worldwide, a testament to his enduring influence on the arts. Mankowitz's extensive body of work includes numerous photographic books and exhibitions, such as "Breaking Stones: 1963-1965 A Band on the Brink of Superstardom," "Rock and Roll Photography," and "50 Years of Rock and Roll Photography." These collections serve as a window into the vibrant and ever-changing world of music through the eyes of a photographer who has been at the forefront of capturing its most iconic moments.
