Demonstration against government's social policies and austerity measures

(23 Nov 2013) Thousands of people gathered in the Spanish capital, Madrid, on Saturday to protest against the government's latest austerity measures and against a new Citizen Security bill due to be approved next Friday. The proposed law would fine citizens for unauthorised demonstrations and make it an offence to insult a police officer. Protesters could also be banned for wearing hoods and masks, and anything else that may hide their identity. The opposition has branded the law undemocratic, and Greenpeace activists attending Saturday's demonstration said the measures were just an excuse to limit people's right to demonstrate. Workers from the national carrier Iberia also attended the rally to protest against job cuts at the airline. Employees have held regular demonstrations ever since the airline was restructured following its merger with British Airways.
