(16 Jun 2014) Kurdistan's Prime Minister Nechirvan Barzani arrived in Iran on Monday to hold talks with Iranian officials over the latest developments in Iraq. Upon his arrival in Tehran, Barzani met with Admiral Ali Shamkhani, Secretary of Iran's Supreme National Security Council. Barzani's visit comes after Iranian President Hassan Rouhani pledged on Saturday to provide Iraq's central government with assistance against militants of the Islamic State of Iraq and Levant (ISIL). ISIL insurgents took control of Mosul and former Iraqi president Saddam Hussein's hometown of Tikrit in a lightening offensive last week. Hundreds of thousands of people have fled their homes since the insurgencies broke out.
