In a virtual news conference, Justice Minister David Lametti highlights one of several projects the federal government is funding in alignment with the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s call to action concerning the establishment of Indigenous law institutes. The project will develop training materials to increase knowledge and understanding of the traditional legal principles of the Secwepemc, a First Nations people residing in the interior of British Columbia. The project will also create a database to store, share and increase access to Secwepemc laws. The Department of Justice is providing $500,000 over three years to support the project. Patrick Weiler, the MP for West Vancouver—Sunshine Coast—Sea to Sky Country, as well as Kukpi7 Wayne M. Christian, the tribal chief of the Shuswap Nation Tribal Council, also take part in the news conference.
