Cutting down an apple tree to a stump, a radical solution

The apple tree had been growing for 20-25 years, and no one had eaten its apples. We finally decided to try an experiment and cut it down to a 1.5-meter stump so we could graft different varieties onto the same tree. If everything worked out, the same thing would happen with some other trees.
