Our healthcare system breeds deadly chaos | Mike Saag | TEDxBirmingham

Dr. Mike Saag is angry about the state of America's healthcare system, and says the fault is not only with the government, insurers, and healthcare providers, but also with us. In this talk he shares how an angry, vocal minority helped turn the tide on the AIDS epidemic, and how we have the opportunity to do the same for our healthcare system. Dr. Michael Saag’s life’s work has been turning the most deadly virus in human history into a chronic, manageable disease. Dr. Saag is a pioneering HIV/AIDS researcher who founded the 1917 Clinic, a comprehensive HIV outpatient clinic that combines patient care with high-quality clinical trials. Over the past 25 years, the 1917 Clinic has treated more than 9,000 patients and has become recognized as one of the best sites for clinical research and care in the United States. A professor of medicine and director of the UAB Center for AIDS Research, Dr. Saag recently wrote a memoir titled Positive: One Doctor's Encounters with Death, Life, and the U.S. Healthcare System. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at http://ted.com/tedx
