San Francisco Supervisor Matt Dorsey recently introduced legislation to update Sanctuary City policies by adding fentanyl-dealing felonies to the list of nearly 50 serious and violent felonies for which San Francisco already withholds sanctuary protections. Dorsey's proposed update would allow local law enforcement officials to honor civil notification requests from federal immigration authorities in narrow circumstances that reflect the gravity of fentanyl-trafficking crimes in San Francisco that currently claim nine times as many lives as homicide; that are singly responsible for three-fourths of drug overdose deaths citywide; and that fuel chaotic and increasingly dangerous street conditions no neighborhood should be forced to endure.
