Korean War Veterans Memorial - 2024 IALD Award of Merit
PROJECT: Korean War Veterans Memorial LOCATION: Washington D.C., United States LIGHTING DESIGN: Flux Studio PHOTOGRAPHY: (c) Anice Hoachlander; Flux Studio The lighting design for this war memorial renovation and expansion uses a deliberate composition of light and dark areas to reinforce the architect's intent for a somber, contemplative atmosphere. The team's scope included upgraded lighting for the existing memorial and lighting the new granite Wall of Remembrance. The architectural intent is supported by considerate lighting installation details and careful fixture positioning while ensuring adequate circulation lighting. Lighting mock-ups were vital in determining fixture positioning and orientation for the Wall of Remembrance. Existing features of the memorial received technology upgrades that made thoughtful use of the existing lighting infrastructure. The 2024 IALD International Lighting Design Awards was celebrated in a San Diego, California, presentation event. Twenty-eight projects from ten countries were recognized and applauded for demonstrating exceptional lighting design and contributing to the professional community. Now in its 41st year, the IALD International Lighting Design Awards is the longest-running program that recognizes architectural lighting design excellence. Receiving an IALD award is universally heralded as the top honor in the lighting design industry.
