Biden's new vaccine rules will affect over 100 Million people in America and will most definitely affect the trucking industry as a whole. The Biden Administration has announced new vaccine rules this Thursday which will affect 100 Million workers throughout the United States of America. Vaccine Rule #1 will affect 84 Million workers and Vaccine Rule #2 will affect 17 Million workers. The way it breaks down is if you are an employer with 100 or more employees, you must have all of your employees vaccinated by January 4 or the employees must provide weekly negative COVID-19 test results. Workers will get paid time off to receive their Covid-19 Vaccine shot and will be granted sick leave should they experience any side effects or adverse reactions and need to take some time to recuperate post vaccination. As to the weekly Covid testing, employees will have to pay out of pocket of these tests and unvaccinated people will need to wear masks or other face coverings while on the job. Healthcare workers won't have the weekly testing option and medical facilities receiving Federal funding from Medicare and Medicaid will also have to be vaccinated by January 4, 2022. These vaccine rules apply to all clinical and non-clinical healthcare workers. Federal employees will have to be vaccinated by November 22, 2021 and Federal contractors must be vaccinated by January 4, 2022. Like the healthcare workers, neither group is allowed weekly testing in lieu of vaccinations and will have to follow through to keep their jobs. Of course some workers are expected to leave their jobs which would have an effect on the U.S. economy and the jobs market but at this time, there are more jobs than unemployed people, so ultimately they shouldn't have too much of a hard time in finding another job with a different employer. Some say that the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) is overstepping their bounds with these vaccine rules as many don't consider Covid-19 to be a work-related hazard. Others believe that the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) are also breaking the law with these vaccine rules but ultimately these vaccine rules will take effect once they're published in the Federal Register. No matter how you cut it, it doesn't bode well for the holiday season with all of the worker shortages nationwide. This leaves very little time for employers to find replacement workers should people quit their jobs. This also doesn't give people much time to decide on what they want to do. Steep fines were also discussed for employers who violate these new Covid-19 vaccine rules. Employers found in violation would be fined up to $13,653 and willful or repeated violations could face fines up to 10 times higher resulting in fines over $130,000 How will this affect the trucking industry? Will company drivers employed by Mega Carriers decide to leave for smaller trucking companies? Will leased on owner operators be willing to become company drivers again after having tasted the freedom and flexibility of being an owner operator trucker? If owner operators choose to lease on with other trucking companies, where would the get their semi trucks and trailers considering all of truck shortages and trailer shortages?
