An alternative perspective - An ethical reading of human rights in Islam

Part of the Carr Center's Middle East lecture Series, Carr Center Fellow Dr. Ali A. Allawi outlines a new pathway for the evolution of a doctrine of human rights and duties in Islam that would be based on an ethical and spiritual understanding of these notions. This would produce an alternative understanding of these concepts rather than the normative and jurisprudential- or Sharia-based- path it has taken so far. The views expressed in this video are those of the speaker(s) at the time of recording and do not necessarily reflect those of the Carr-Ryan Center for Human Rights or Harvard Kennedy School. These perspectives have been presented to encourage debate on important public policy challenges.
