Upon the outbreak of the Mexican-American War, many in America saw this as an opportunity to seize vast amounts of territory, most notably California. And, after the war, America would sign the Treaty of Guadalupe-Hidalgo, which would give California and New Mexico to America. But, before this, there was actually a push for the US to annex ALL of Mexico. Mexico was extremely unstable, so, as a result, those in favor of annexation saw this as the only way to pacify the region. But, in the end, due to backlash, this wouldn't end up happening.
