What do your fans wear, where do they work, what TV shows do they watch, what blogs do they read, what do they do for recreation, and who is their favorite cultural hero? If you are unable to explain your fans in detail, you should immediately begin looking for a solution. Knowing precisely who your followers are influences the channels you use to contact them and the manner in which you engage with them once you do. Reality: Ignoring these insights will result in missed opportunities and time wasted. How can you ever be able to promote your talents in a manner that will benefit everyone if you do not know where your followers congregate, what they are interested in, and why they spend money? When you disregard this aspect, potential listeners move on without experiencing your song. And you continue without the satisfaction of having shared your music and the resulting notoriety and cash. Conduct some basic, informal study as a solution. If you perform live, ask the audience questions during intermissions and after your performances. Document your observations. What types of individuals visit you? What characteristics do your fans share? You may discover a part of the population you've been ignoring, but which could benefit from your music, by asking questions. Observe the types of individuals who support similar artists if you are just starting out. Or just define the type of individual to whom you wish to appeal with your band or record label. This need not be an intricate study project. Determine the types of individuals you wish to reach with your marketing and sales communications. This will expedite your travel to them.
