This video clip shows an MK19 Automatic Grenade Launcher being test fired by US Combat Troops. A machine gun is defined as a fully automatic mounted or portable firearm, which is normally designed to fire bullets in quick succession from an ammunition belt or magazine, at a rate of several hundred rounds per minute, or more with modern weapons. From earlier attempts to create a reliable rapid-firing weapon it was not until the mid-19th Century, when Richard Gatling invented the Model 1862 Gatling Gun which was used by the US Navy. Machine guns are generally grouped into 3 main categories: Submachine Guns; Machine Guns; and Autocannons. The difference between machine guns and autocannons is based on caliber, with autocannons using calibers larger than 16 mm. A notable development in machine gun technology was the minigun, which in the case of the M134 Minigun has a 7.62 mm, six-barreled machine gun with a high rate of fire (2,000 to 6,000 rounds per minute). It features Gatling-style rotating barrels and is powered by an electric motor. A variant of this is the GAU-17/A which is widely used on US helicopters and rapid assault boats.
