U.S. redesignates North Korea as violator of freedom of religion

미, 북한 등 10개국 '종교자유 특별우려국' 재지정 The United States has relisted North Korea as a violator of religious freedom for the 17th year in a row. The State Department said Thursday that North Korea is among ten countries that were re-designated as Countries of Particular Concern for engaging in or tolerating "systematic, ongoing, and egregious violations of religious freedom." The department's spokeswoman Heather Nauert said the violations include torture, degrading treatment or punishment, and prolonged detention without charge among others. The designated countries are subject to further action by the U.S., including economic sanctions. Other countries on the blacklist include Burma, China, Iran, and Saudi Arabia.
