From then on, the name "Super Mario Bros." was associated with success. While two different versions of Super Mario Bros. 2 were released in Japan and the West, Super Mario Bros. 3 was released worldwide and, due to its enormous ambition, still bears the title of "King of 8-bit Platformers." After Super Mario World, another 2D platformer in the Mario series, was released for the launch of the SNES in 1990 – unofficially called Super Mario Bros. 4 – the series fell silent for a long time. Although the spin-offs were re-released for the GBA as part of the Super Mario Advance series, Nintendo, like all other game developers, was in a transition phase towards 3D. For years, 2D was considered outdated and practically extinct. That was until Nintendo had the idea of reviving the popular series in 2006 and continuing it with New Super Mario Bros. The game was a huge success, so Nintendo set out to release a spin-off for all subsequent consoles. The Nintendo Wii version was released in 2009, and both the Nintendo 3DS and Nintendo Wii U versions in 2012. Many fans liked the games but wished they could create and design their own levels. Large hacking communities formed around the old and new Super Mario Bros. games with precisely this goal in mind. Nintendo responded by releasing Super Mario Maker on the Nintendo Wii U to mark the series' 30th anniversary. This marked a turning point: For the first time, fans could legally create, share, and play levels with each other. The game's greatest strength, however, was also its greatest weakness: the Wii U. While the gamepad's integration was fantastic, the console's general unpopularity meant that Super Mario Maker failed to reach as many fans as originally hoped. Therefore, a Nintendo 3DS version was initially released in 2016, but its lack of online capability meant it was only moderately well-received. A successor for the Nintendo Switch, Super Mario Maker 2, was announced during a Nintendo Direct in February 2019 and released on June 28, 2019. Nintendo relied on the old and tried-and-true with Super Mario Maker 2. The level editor came with some new extras. The game styles Super Mario Bros., Super Mario Bros. 3, Super Mario World, and New Super Mario Bros. also returned. These were complemented by Super Mario 3D World, a new building style adapted for a 2.5D world. The basic principle of players creating levels, sharing and rating them online, remained intact, although a feature allowing players to negatively rate levels was added. Players can participate in both competitive and cooperative online competitions. A patch will soon add online play with friends. A new feature was a more extensive single-player experience, dubbed "Adventure Mode." In this mode, construction worker Mario must help rebuild Peach's castle, which was accidentally destroyed.
