Across YouTube, I have seen so many channels which create video essays and after a recent rewatch of all the Spiderman films, I was inspired to try to create one myself. I have thought about doing a video like this before and figured that even if this video isn't of the highest quality, its a start and something that I can maybe improve on if I make more in the future. I personally love Andrew Garfield's Spiderman and think it was a shame that we never saw an Amazing Spiderman 3, with the teases of the sinister six. I adore this scene, as it perfectly captures the message of "Spiderman never wins". #spiderman ---Rough Script (I may have made small changes when I actually recorded): The Gwen Stacy Death scene in The Amazing Spiderman 2, is one of my personal favourite Spider-Man scenes. It caps off the end of Andrew Garfield's portrayal nicely, as it sticks with the theme of “Spiderman never wins”. What I mean by that is, no matter how many lives he saves and no matter how many times he saves New York, it is always at a personal sacrifice. Before I get too in depth with the scene itself, there was something I noticed when reviewing the footage for this video. The very first sound you hear when the movie begins, is the chime of a clock tower bell. There is some really good foreshadowing throughout this film that makes rewatches so much fun. Anyway, back to the focus of this video essay, the tragic loss of Gwen. During the fight with the Green Goblin, we see Spiderman drop Gwen onto a lower part of the clock tower, where she is balancing on the clock’s mechanics. Shortly after this, it collapses after taking damage and Spiderman quickly webs Gwen to stop her from falling to her death, the clock begins to move until it gets to the point where Spiderman wedges his foot in the mechanics to literally stop time. I see this as a metaphor for Spiderman fighting back against the fact it is a matter of time before Gwen was going to get hurt or killed for being close to him. Throughout this scene, we can see the clock trying to progress the timeline and Spiderman does all he can to stop it. Eventually, the clock ticks, cutting the web and Gwen’s time is up. I think this is a sign that Peter can even stop time but would never be able to keep Gwen alive. As Gwen beings to fall, the clock frantically spins to almost “catchup up” showing that Gwen's death has probably been overdue. I think the pacing of this scene is done excellently, whilst we are looking down at Gwen from Spider-Man's perspective, everything is in slow motion, which is likely how Peter’s mind would have seen this unfold. However, when seeing from Gwen's side, everything is sped up and more in line with reality. I think what is especially engaging about this entire scene, is that you completely, without a doubt expect Spiderman to save Gwen. Much like, Spiderman would have expected to save her. We get to experience what we think is a heroic, last second save – we see the web pull tight and we are eagerly waiting to see the couple reunited. Yet, we are instead faced with a very quiet scene which seems to last forever as Peter drops to the ground. The acting by Andrew in this scene is fantastic, it truly sells this as a real relationship. We see him transaction from light “hey”s, to beginning to sob saying her name.. He tries to deny she's gone by reassuring her that “she’s okay” until the reality sets in and the music begins. When he starts to see the blood, he gets more desperate and we faintly hear him say “I cant do this without you”. You cant fully hear he says it, but you know he is and I think it was a great decision to have him struggle to get his words out on this final line.
