Chinese Company to Open Rail Car Assembly Plant in Chicago

The China Railway Rolling Stock Corporation (CRRC), the world's biggest train maker by revenue, held a groundbreaking ceremony for the planned construction of a rail car assembly plant on Thursday in Chicago. The CCRC won a 1.3-billion-U.S. dollar order to build rail cars for Chicago last March. The Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) awarded the contract to build 846 rail cars to CRRC subsidiary CSR Sifang America, which submitted the lowest bid, according to a statement posted on the CTA's website. As part of its winning bid, CRRC will build a new rail car assembly facility in Chicago -- the first of its kind in 35 years, with an aim to see the first cars going into service in 2020. The facility is expected to provide 170 jobs for the local community. "It will leverage that investment to create additional jobs, not just building new rail lines, not just building new stations, not just electrical capacity there. (But) making sure that we have the rail cars that are going be on the line, built here in Chicago," said Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel. "This shows a new feature of China's investment in the United States, which is more and more enterprises are investing here and manufacturing here, as well as provide more employment and tax revenue for the city. This shows a distinct feature of the mutually beneficial and win-win economic and trade cooperation between China and the United States," said Chinese Consul General in Chicago Hong Lei. Chicago boasts the second biggest public transport system in the U.S., operating eight subway lines with a total length of 170km. The 846 new rail cars will replace the ones currently used.
