Lachlan Coin: "Direct Sequencing of SARS-COV-2"

This week's speakers is Lachlan Coin, the Deputy Director of the IMB Centre for Superbug Solutions at the University of Queensland. Coin is a mathematician with a research focus on developing genomics and bioinformatics tools in infectious disease and cancer. He was originally drawn by the rigor and intellectual challenge of pure mathematics, but now uses his math background as a toolkit for solving complex problems in analyzing high throughput biological data. Coin is best known for using approaches borrowed from machine learning, statistics and probability theory to interrogate genomic data. In particular, he has focused on using these approaches to uncover genomic deletions and amplifications and has identified changes that are associated with increased risk of obesity and diabetes. Organized by Janelia's Sarada Viswanathan and Loren Looger, the Science of COVID-19 seminar series brings in outside experts, covers papers and preprints, and highlights local efforts in testing, production, and analysis.
