Chinese Carmaker Chery Targets Morocco As African Hub - Prolific Chinese automaker, Chery, has announced plans for its expansion into the African market, with plans to establish and build a thorough automotive hub in Morocco, according to a recent report by Morocco World News. According to the report, Chery identifies Morocco as the "most essential market" for its African strategy, owing to the country's position as the continent's largest automobile market. The automotive firm intends to flood the Moroccan market on all fronts; engaging traditional gasoline-powered vehicles, neighborhood electric vehicles, hybrid models, as well as the ingenious self-driving cars. The reports also suggest Chery’s willingness to support the Moroccan government's initiative to promote local assembly of Completely Knocked Down vehicles and not only import Completely Built Units. The Chinese state-owned automobile manufacturer headquartered in Wuhu principal products are passenger cars, minivans and SUVs. It sells passenger cars under the Chery marque and commercial vehicles under the Karry brand. Chery is the 10th-largest China-based automaker measured by 2012 output (around 590,000 units). In 2012, Jaguar Land Rover formed a 50:50 joint venture dubbed Chery Jaguar Land Rover for the production of Jaguar and Land Rover cars in China with Chery. The company also assembles cars in Egypt with local partner and has sold over 30,000 Speranza models in the country since 2004.
