‘Long time coming’: Charlottesville removes Robert E. Lee statue

Nearly a century after it was first erected - and almost four years after it sparked a deadly weekend of violence in the US city of Charlottesville, Virginia - the statue of Robert E Lee has been removed. The city’s council say it is a step towards racial justice. Onlookers, including Black Lives Matter supporters, cheered - as the figure of the confederate general was pulled down from its pedestal.
