Refugee Camps in Greece Threatened by COVID-19

How can you wash your hands properly when you don't even have clean water or soap? How can you maintain social distancing in a cramped refugee camp? Governments all over the world are urging people to take immediate steps to slow the spread of the new coronavirus. Yet in Moria camp on the Greek island of Lesbos, most refugees and asylum seekers are not able to take basic safety precautions. Access to water and soap are limited, and families of five or six have to sleep in small tents. The camp is dangerously overcrowded. Marco Sandrone, Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) field coordinator in Moria camp, describes how MSF is adapting its clinic to care for people with suspected cases of COVID-19 while continuing to safely provide primary health services to our patients. MSF is calling for people trapped in these squalid camps to be evacuated immediately--and this is especially urgent now that they are at high risk for COVID-19 transmission.
