Apologies for technical difficulties throughout this panel discussion resulting in very poor visual and audio quality. ____________________________ The Role of the United Nations Special Rapporteur on Violence against Women with reference to Trinidad and Tobago and the Wider Caribbean Professor Rashida Manjoo United Nations Special Rapporteur on Violence Against Women, its Causes and Consequences Ms. Rashida Manjoo (South Africa) is UN Special Rapporteur on violence against women, its causes and consequences by the United Nations Human Rights Council starting in August 2009. She is a Professor in the Department of Public Law of the University of Cape Town. She is the former Parliamentary commissioner of the Commission on Gender Equality (CGE) in South Africa, a constitutional body mandated to oversee the promotion and protection of gender equality. ____________________________ The aim of the Caribbean study UN rapporteur tour is to discuss constructively with both State and non-State actors the matter of violence against women and to identify strategies and ways to collaborate to prevent and respond to this human rights issue. ____________________________ The panel discussion provides an opportunity for key stakeholders to gain insights into the roles and functions of the UN Special Rapporteur and the Rapporteur on the Rights of Women and, more particularly, the mechanisms available for placing country-level information relating to the realization of women's civil, political, social, cultural and developmental rights on the regional and international human rights agendas. ____________________________ IGDS Panel Discussion Promoting the Rights of Women in Trinidad and Tobago: Issues and Challenges Monday, April 27th 2015 | 4:00 – 5.30 P.M.
