The game marks the return of bounty hunter Samus Aran to a classic 3D first-person science fiction adventure. Initially announced for Nintendo Switch in June 2017, the game suffered the devastating news in January 2019 that development was being completely restarted due to unsatisfactory results. As a consequence, the collaboration with Bandai Namco was terminated, and Retro Studios, the original developer of the first three Prime games, took over, while Kensuke Tanabe remained as producer. After a long odyssey, the game finally arrived on December 4, 2025, for Nintendo Switch with improved visuals and performance, specifically HDR and 4K resolution at 60 FPS in Quality Mode or 1080p at 120 FPS in Performance Mode for Nintendo Switch 2. The story centers on the alien planet Viewros. Samus awakens there after an incident in the Galactic Federation and must find a way back home. Beyond retains the first-person adventure gameplay of previous installments in the series: Players control Samus through non-linear areas, fighting enemies, discovering upgrades to enhance her abilities, and scanning ruins and artifacts of a past alien species called the Lamorn to gather information about the environment. She also battles various creatures and encounters her familiar foe, Sylux. New to the game, however, is Samus's psychic powers, which she can use to control the trajectory of her arm's energy blasts or manipulate objects to solve puzzles. She also takes control of a motorcycle called the Vi-O-La, allowing her to travel long distances much faster, which proves particularly useful in the desert, which serves as a link between various self-contained biomes, including jungle, ice landscape, and volcano. New to the game is Samus's psychic abilities, which she can use to control the trajectory of her arm's energy blasts or manipulate objects to solve puzzles. The Nintendo Switch 2 version also supports mouse controls for the Joy-Con 2, allowing for more precise aiming.
