The United States holds 'constant' discussions with South Korea about the deployment of an advanced U.S. missile defense system on the Korean Peninsula. Pentagon spokesman John Kirby said at a press briefing on Tuesday that both countries recognize the importance of the capability of the Terminal High-Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) system. Kirby's remarks appear to be contrary to the stance that South Korean and other U.S. officials have insisted on. Seoul and Washington have reiterated that no consultations were made between the two countries about deploying a THAAD battery to South Korea. David Helvey, the visiting U.S. deputy assistant secretary of defense for East Asia, said on Wednesday that the two allies had no official discussions on the THAAD issue. Meanwhile, South Korea's Defense Minister Han Min-Koo told a parliamentary committee on Wednesday that the country needs to maintain 'strategic ambiguity' in dealing with the THAAD deployment issue.
