P0011: "A" Camshaft Position - Timing Over-Advanced or System Performance (Bank 1) What it means: This code indicates that the timing for the camshaft on Bank 1 (the side of the engine containing cylinder #1) is more advanced than what the Engine Control Module (ECM) is expecting. P0021: "A" Camshaft Position - Timing Over-Advanced or System Performance (Bank 2) What it means: This code is similar to P0011, but it applies to Bank 2, which is the side of the engine not containing cylinder #1 in a V-type engine. Common Causes (Both Codes): Faulty Variable Valve Timing (VVT) Solenoid: The solenoid that controls camshaft timing may be stuck or malfunctioning. Oil Issues: Low oil pressure, dirty or sludged oil, or the use of incorrect oil viscosity can affect the VVT system's performance. Camshaft Position Sensor Problem: Faulty or misaligned sensors can lead to incorrect timing readings. Timing Chain or Belt Problems: A stretched or worn timing chain/belt or a faulty tensioner can cause timing issues. ECM Problems (Less Common): A malfunction in the engine control module could send or receive incorrect timing signals. Symptoms You May Notice: Illuminated Check Engine Light (CEL): Both codes will trigger the CEL. Poor Engine Performance: Reduced power or acceleration, and rough idling. Decreased Fuel Economy: The engine may run less efficiently. Engine Misfires or Noise: Possible irregularities in engine operation.
