Acura MDX Check Emission System Warning (Causes, Solutions And How To Reset). In this video tutorial I will show you how to reset check emission system warning on an Acura MDX. But first, What causes the check emission system warning in an Acura MDX? A failed oxygen sensor and catalytic converter are the leading causes of the warning in the check emission system. Here’s a look at each: Oxygen sensor When this component fails, you’ll get the following symptoms: • The check engine light turns on. • Reduced engine performance. • Poor fuel efficiency. • Black emissions with a strong fuel smell. To fix this, Diagnose the problem using an OBD2 scanner. Here’s how: • Locate the OBD2 scanner in your Acura MDX. Most Acuras have it under the driver’s side dashboard. Please consult your manual if you cannot find it. • Connect your OBD2 scanner and turn on the ignition without starting the engine. • Read the codes from your scanner. The oxygen sensor code P0130 indicates a defective oxygen sensor circuit. Once you’ve detected the issue, • Park your Acura and locate the old oxygen sensor. • Once located, remove the old sensor using an oxygen sensor wrench. • Apply an anti-seize lubricant to the threads of the new sensor before installing it. • Screw in the replacement part by hand and tighten it with an oxygen sensor wrench to the correct torque. Catalytic converter You’ll notice the following when there’s a problem with your catalytic converter: • A check engine light. • A rotten egg or sulfur smell. • Poor acceleration and fuel economy. To fix this, Diagnose the problem using an OBD2 scanner using the steps outlined in this video. You’ll get the P0420 code if you have a faulty catalytic converter. In most cases, a quick clean fixes the problem. Here’s how to clean a clogged catalytic converter. • Get a catalytic converter cleaner. • Add gas to your car. Most cleaners require 4 US gallons or 15 L of gas in your tank. However, consult the cleaner's instructions before adding the cleaner. • Add the cleaner to your gas tank and drive around. The check emission system warning should clear as you drive. • In severe cases, replace the catalytic converter. Finally, clear the check emission system warning. Here’s how: • Connect your OBD2 scanner and turn on the ignition without starting the engine. • Read the codes from your scanner and click the clear codes option. • Check if the issue persists before disconnecting your scanner.
