The rules: A run of Etrian Odyssey where one only fights mandatory encounters would see one reach Fenrir's room with a lv 1 party with no means of dealing decent damage or to survive. On top of that, weapons and armors require fighting random battles for drops. To make the low level playthrough viable, a few concessions have to be made. Here are those concessions and a brief explanation as to why: 1 - Experience can be earned from bosses, FOE and event encounters. This one is simple. The FOE and event encounters are close enough to mandatory encounters and thus are a natural way to increase the exp available. The general rule here is that you can only beat one of each. But certain parts of the game do not allow for that. The exceptions are as follows: a. Skolls are fair game to kill once each. The reason for this is that Immunize becomes vital to survive starting on the second stratum, and the exp available up to Cernunnos is too little to get both Immunize and an offense capable of outpacing a Curoller's heal. b. Bloodants and Servants which block the way to Royalant must be killed to proceed with the game. c. Royalant's infinite minions can summon more minions which give exp. Do not abuse them. d. Killclaw requires a random battle to be fought to spawn it. Still allowed as an FOE. e. Iwaopeln requires that you beat every FOE on the floor before killing it. 2 - A gathering party can be levelled and used to gather resources from gathering spots and to unlock new equipment. The gathering party cannot tread unexplored territory. This is, unfortunately, a necessary condition. Even with boosted Immunize, when the enemies begin dealing 300 damage to a party without buffs, the 30 damage lv 15 Immunize reduces that to is still too high damage for a low level party. Other important points are the need of a good weapon to outpace Cernunnos's healing and kill Royalant before running out of resources. FOE drops could have been a solution, but those also require regular monster drops to actually make into gear.
