Oxymercuration and Demercuration: conversion of alkene and alkyne into alcohol and ketone.
In this video I have described the conversion of alkene into alcohol i.e. hydration of alkene by oxymercuration and demercuration process. This addition follows Merkovnikov’s rule where the negative part of the addendum (OH group) will attach to that carbon which is poorer in hydrogen. The reaction proceeds through three member, cationic mercurinium intermediates which produced due to the soft-soft interaction betwwn the alkene and mercuric (Hg2+) salts under acidic condition. Alcohol is produced in the second step through the breakage of C-Hg bond in presence of sodium borohydride. In addition to alkene, the alkynes also participate in oxymercuration and demercuration. Surprisingly, they do not require any reducing agent to prepare the final compound i.e. ketone. At last, I have briefly explained a comparison between alkyne hydroboration and oxymercuration for clear understating about them. I have also uploaded some related videos.
