Set ten years after the events of Chaos Rising, it takes place in the war-torn Sub-Sector Aurelia, where the Imperium of Man prepares an Exterminatus to purge the region of heresy and chaos. The story focuses on the corruption of Chapter Master Azariah Kyras and his descent into daemonhood. A key innovation of Retribution is its multi-faction campaign. Players can experience the story from the perspective of six different races: Space Marines, Imperial Guard, Eldar, Orks, Tyranids, and Chaos Space Marines with each offering unique missions and endings within the same overarching narrative. Gameplay continues the tactical, squad-based combat of Dawn of War II, emphasising cover mechanics, hero abilities, and strategic use of terrain rather than large-scale base construction. However, Retribution reintroduces some traditional RTS elements, such as the ability to produce units mid-mission and capture resource points. It was released for Microsoft Windows in March 2011, and later for macOS and Linux in 2016. The expansion received generally positive reviews, praised for its faction variety, replay value, and improved multiplayer balance. Critics, however, noted that the campaign missions could become repetitive and that the narrative lacked the emotional depth of previous entries.
