Lauren and Christian's wedding weekend started a night early. They invited us to their rehearsal dinner at Ristorante Roma, and before it even officially began, Christian's grandpa walked through the door — a trip from Pennsylvania he'd been told wasn't happening. Lauren and Christian's mom had arranged the whole thing in secret. By the time Friday came around, we already knew their families and had laughed with their friends, so walking into Black Iris Estate felt less like showing up for work and more like showing up for people we knew. Every detail carried something. Lauren wore family pearls passed down through the women in her family, her grandmother's ring, and a hand-knit handkerchief her grandmother made. Christian prepared handwritten notes for every one of his groomsmen, and at their first look he handed Lauren a bound album holding every love letter they'd written each other through long distance. Their ceremony paused for worship — family, friends, and the wedding party singing together in the willow chapel — and a reserved chair sat in remembrance of a close friend of Christian's, whose young daughter walked as a flower girl. They told us on our first video call: "We're going to have a party." They weren't kidding. A club-style bridal party entrance, pom-poms, glow sticks, cigars, a guest on the harmonica, and Lauren dancing through the reception in her dad's IU blazer.
