Parts of Australia's east have recorded their hottest day in more than two years. The mercury topped 40°C in Sydney, while some inland towns reached nearly 41°C, raising the risk of bushfires. An out-of-control blaze is already threatening properties and livestock in the state of New South Wales. Firefighters have been working to contain almost 40 raging infernos. Total fire bans have been ordered in several parts of the state. Some 35 public schools have also been closed. Forecasters said the hot and dry conditions are likely to persist until Wednesday.
