Whittier: Whittier PD Officer Hurt in Crash while Responding to Back Up call.

CAPTION: A whittier PD officer was briefly hospitalized and a civilian declined transport after colliding early Friday morning. Whittier Police were following a stolen vehicle into South Whittier and requesting the assistance of an LA County Sheriff’s helicopter. The vehicle pulled over in a cul de sac. One officer who was responding to backup on the felony stop was involved in a collision with a white van at Telegraph Road & Mills Avenue. The patrol car suffered major front end damage and the officer was taken to a nearby trauma center for further assessment of injuries. The civilian driver remained on scene, hurt but declining medical transport. The crash remains under investigation by the California Highway Patrol. This scene also includes some of the final moments of Whittier PD Officer Lanell Whitfield before he was tragically killed in an off duty motorcycle accident just 38 hours later.
