Trump's first impeachment - 2020 Rep. Adam Schiff, D-Calif., noted at the impeachment trial for President Donald Trump on Jan. 24 that Republicans will make the argument that the July call between the president and Ukraine’s Volodymyr Zelensky was “perfect” because the president “insists that they do.” Schiff said Republicans have a “client to represent,” alluding to Trump. Schiff pushed back on the argument that Ukraine, too, said the call was perfect. “What that really means is that Ukraine wants a future,” he said. “Ukraine knows that if they acknowledged that they were shaken down by the president of the United States, the president of the United States will make them pay.” He added: “The framers did not expect you to leave your common sense at the door.” After spending two days laying out the case for the first article of impeachment — abuse of power — House Democrats spent the better part of Friday making the case for the second article of impeachment — obstruction of Congress. The House of Representatives impeached the president in December. The Senate trial will determine whether Trump is acquitted, or convicted of the two articles of impeachment and removed from office.
