Opening and Closing to The Delinquents VHS (Roadshow Home Video, 1985, Spoof VHS)

The Delinquents, better known in Japan as “Sotsugyo Satsugai”, was first released in 1982, and proved to be one of the more controversial animated films in its heyday, involving a series of sex, drugs and ultraviolence, with the creator behind the 70s manga series of said film admitting that he was influenced by the “Lady Snowblood” film series, and Stanley Kubrick’s “A Clockwork Orange”, hence the mishmash of styles and ideas condensed in the 96-Minute action gore fest. While it caused a stir even at the height of its notoriety, Sotsugyo Satsugai managed to be an unprecedented box office hit for an international animated movie, raking in $55 Million, notably rivalling Disney’s previous animated film at the time. Harmony Gold, a then-unknown anime dubbing company, took on the English dub, and they ended up cutting out nearly 10 minutes of footage, with several sex scenes either trimmed or removed outright; giving it a different synth-inspired soundtrack that differed greatly from the original film’s alleged rock soundtrack; and called it “The Delinquents”, which didn’t help the movie stand out when there were two other films that existed with the same title. Released in late 1983 under Orion Pictures, the dubbed version bombed massively at the premiere, with Orion threatening to disown the film before that year was even halfway over, and the lead VA to change her pseudonym to the more familiar Reba West. Come late 1985, Roadshow released the movie on Home Video to a limited number of 1,000, making it one of the rarest tapes Roadshow released.
