(3 Nov 1979) West Germany's BMW team proved their superiority over local challengers, taking the first two places in the 1000 sports cars race at Kyalami circuit in Johannesburg. West Germany's Helmut Kelleners and co-driver Eddie Keizan stayed amongst the top three for five hours before taking the lead and keeping it until the end. Another German team, Winkflhock-Hans Stuck was second and out of the 51 starters, only 21 which finished the race.
