The adulterous woman, whom Jesus saved from stoning, is it a real text, of the Gospel according to St. John or is it a text added later? Let’s have a look at the Gospel according to John about the adulterous woman, saved by Jesus from the sentence to death by stoning. Is it authentic or was it added to the Gospel later on ? This story is found in chapter 8 of St. John. It's an absolutely beautiful story. The Jews had decided to trap Jesus. They bring him a woman caught in the act of adultery. It was Mary Magdalene. They know where to find it. You can find this beautiful story in John, chapter 8. The Jews decided to frame Jesus by bringing Mary Magdalena to him. She has been caught in adultery. (They know where to find her) They say :"Teacher, this woman has been caught in the act of adultery. Now in the law Moses commanded us to stone such women. So what do you say ?” " They try to test Jesus that they might have some charge to bring against him.. If he says, "stone her," his message of love is fake; if he says, "Do not stone her!", he stands against the law of Moses. Either way he is wrong.. It is written that Jesus bent down, started writing with his finger on the floor, then he stood up and said to them : "Let him who is without sin among you be the first to throw a stone at her.." Then everybody went away, beginning with the older ones; Jesus, left alone with the woman, turned to her and said : "Where are they ? Has no one condemned you ? " "No," she said, "no one, Lord," He replied to her, "Neither do i condemn you: go, and from now on sin no more.” " This story has been challenged. Why ? First, because of an exegetical fact. We can find this particular excerpt from the Gospel of John in another place, if we read an older version of the Gospel. That brought the suspicion it was an addon.. Actually, there is a deeper reason. A human one. toning adulterous women brings a contradiction in men’s hearts. In one hand, they would secretly be pleased to have sex with her, when on the other hand, they despise her for being adulterous, considering she could be the mother of their child, not being aware of it. Men have been struggling about this feeling for ages. In case of adultery, The law of Moses punishment is stoning to death. So does Islam. Nowadays, Christians, unlike Muslims, declare : Stoning to death has been abolished by Jesus. It deserves punishment, there is consequences, for adultery is a real sin, but there is no more stoning. For this reason, some insisted that this passage was a fake, made up, added intentionally by the disciples of Jesus. It is actually on the same page as the rest of the Gospel and if this text was missing, the stoning would have been abolished nowadays anyway.. Jesus says : “But i say to you that everyone who is angry with his brother will be liable to judgment; whoever insults his brother will be liable to the council; and whoever says, ‘You fool!’ will be liable to the hell of fire.” (Matthew, 5; 22) Jesus is practical and logical. His anger was not toward the adulterous woman. : But to the proud Pharisees he casts 8 different curses "Woe be unto you, Pharisees, hypocrites!" Jesus stands against pride. Here is what i think this text is not a fake, it may have changed places, it may have embarrassed some, but it makes it clear that Jesus, by this text, makes it impossible to stoning adulterous women again.
