Shots Ring Out at High-Stakes Poker Game

A poker raid in Chattanooga ends in gunfire, but more interesting is who was playing in the high stakes game and where. Police seized thousands of dollars in cash, drugs and car when they broke up the game at the office of a medical staffing company."There was a doctor in the poker game and he came out and checked on the suspect for us," says Chief Dodd.That doctor is one of the 16 others cited for illegal gambling. Police say 43 year old Kenny Higdon hosted the game at his business."Every so often, the parking lot's kind of full in the evening when I'm still doing some chart work," says Plastic Surgeon Dr. Mark Leech.Dr. Leech works across the way from Higdon's business. He says the complex owners warned Higdon about hosting an after-hours gathering. Police have been watching the game for months."We knew how they operated," says Chief Dodd. "They had a lookout in place."Police haven't identified that lookout, but they did say Billups catered the poker game. Herman's Catering, the company he worked for, declined to comment. Police have arrested Billups before for Assault, but in this case the most he faced was a ticket."It's kind of odd for a suspect to pull a weapon to try to escape from something that would probably have been a citation situation," says Chief Dodd.The caterer who pulled the gun and the man who owned the business both face felony charges tonight because police say they had drugs on them.
